What you need to prepare all four plant-based drinks:
- A blender
- A fine sieve or a nut milk bag
4 good reasons to make your own plant-based drink:
- Sustainable. When you make your own plant-based drink, you can easily reduce packaging waste from store-bought milk or plant-based milk. It's also particularly good for the environment if you buy the ingredients, such as nuts ( cashews , hazelnuts ), without packaging, for example in a zero-waste shop.
- Customizable. You can also tailor the milk to your exact taste and decide how sweet you want it to be. You can use the pulp left over from making the milk to create delicious recipes and enhance your dishes.
- Always on hand. Since you only need a maximum of four ingredients to make your own plant-based milk, it's also quick to prepare. You probably already have the ingredients at home, so you can make your own vegan milk even on a Sunday, holiday, or late in the evening.
- Fast. Most homemade plant-based drinks take no longer than 20 minutes to prepare. So you see, it doesn't take much time at all to make your own plant-based milk.
4 delicious recipes for your homemade plant-based drinks:
1. Oat milk
You can make your own oat milk quickly and easily in just 20 minutes. To do this, soak 100g of oat flakes in water for about 15 minutes. Put the oat flakes in a blender together with a date, a pinch of salt and about 1 liter of water. If you like, you can add some vanilla flavoring to your oat milk to easily turn it into a vanilla version. Blend the ingredients in the blender for about 1 minute.
Finally, take a sieve and a bowl and strain the oat milk through the sieve to filter out any lumps from the plant milk and collect the clear oat milk in the bowl. It's that easy to enjoy your favorite muesli and favorite porridge with your own oat milk.
A study by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) states: “It has been shown that oat beta-glucan lowers blood cholesterol levels. Lowering blood cholesterol levels may reduce the risk of (coronary) heart disease.” [1]
2. Hazelnut milk
Another vegan milk alternative is delicious hazelnut milk. To make it, soak about 100g of hazelnuts in water, preferably overnight. Once the hazelnuts are nice and soft, drain the water.
Put the hazelnuts in a blender with a sweetener of your choice (you can use dates, agave syrup, or date syrup, for example) and 1 liter of water. Blend the ingredients well until they form a smooth milk. Finally, strain the hazelnut milk through a sieve or use a nut milk bag to remove any small pieces from your milk.
3. Almond milk
We have two different recipes for you to try for your homemade almond milk! The first one is particularly quick to prepare. 😊
1st variation
The first homemade almond milk variation can be prepared quickly without soaking the nuts. You will need 3 tablespoons of almond butter (you can use either white or brown almond butter), two dates, one liter of water, and some agave syrup. Put all the ingredients in your blender and blend well until the milk is nice and creamy. Finally, strain the almond milk through a sieve to filter out any small pieces.
2nt variation
For the second option, soak 200g of almonds in a bowl of warm water. Leave the almonds covered with water overnight. The next day, drain the water. Then put the almonds in your blender with about twice as much water and a little sweetener. Strain the almond milk briefly to remove any pieces. It's best to use a nut milk bag to squeeze the nut milk over a bowl. In winter, you can easily add cinnamon to the almond milk for extra flavor.
4. Cashew milk
For the last plant-based milk alternative, you need 100g of cashews and 3 cups of water to soak the cashews. When the cashews are soft, you can blend them with 2-4 cups of water, two dates, and a little salt. You can also use a sieve or nut milk bag to strain the cashew milk.
Two final tips for your plant-based milk
Simply use up the leftovers:
The pulp, i.e. the leftovers that remain after straining or in the nut milk bag, can easily be reused. You can simply add the leftovers to your muesli, use them as a spread on bread, or incorporate them into cake batter.
A pinch of salt:
To make your own plant-based milk last longer, always add a pinch of salt when blending 😉
