This recipe does not contain any refined sugar at all, yet the muffins are still pleasantly sweet enough for children thanks to ripe bananas. The rule of thumb here is: the browner the bananas, the better, because they taste even sweeter.

Why should children not consume too much refined sugar?
Children would love to snack at any time of the day. However, they should rather keep their hands off sugary, unhealthy snacks. An unbalanced diet with too many sweet foods can lead to a drop in performance and poor concentration in children, because sweets contain lots of calories but no vitamins, which are essential for concentration. Tooth decay, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels can be further serious consequences of an unhealthy diet.
In Austria, one in three children is already overweight, with a high body mass index (BMI) – usually as a result of excessive sugar consumption.

How can I replace sugar when baking?
But cutting out sugar doesn't mean you have to give up delicious home baking. Bananas, for example, are an excellent alternative to refined sugar. Not only do they contain a lot of natural fruit sweetness, but they are also rich in vitamin B6, magnesium and potassium.
